Salerno Literature turns 10. Between happiness and revolution

Happiness the revolution: this is the theme chosen for the first ten years of Salerno Letteratura, scheduled from 18 to 25 June. A courageous challenge: in a historical moment marked by profound crises it is difficult to question the happiness that literature itself has difficulty in probing, but perhaps – as Pier Paolo Pasolini provocatively indicated, to which, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his birth, a path, Pasoliniana – happiness and revolution are deeply linked.

The 200 events of the festival directed by Gennaro Carillo and Paolo Di Paolo will enliven the historic center of Salerno with top-level guests including André Aciman, Massimo Cacciari, Francesca Michielin, Massimo Popolizio, Ingo Schulze, Mariangela Gualtieri, Vito Mancuso, Giancarlo De Cataldo, Maura Gancitano, Dacia Maraini, Valeria Parrella, Marino Niola, Diego De Silva, Valerio Magrelli, Aldo Cazzullo, Roberto Esposito, David Foenkinos, Alan Friedman, Francesco Rutelli, Mattia Feltri, Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, Elisabetta Moro, Aurelio Picca, Filippo Ceccarelli, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Eva Cantarella, Carmen Aguirre, Monica Ojeda, Gino Castaldo, Sergio Rizzo, Daria Bignardi, Ermal Meta, Maylis de Kerangal, Gianni Cuperlo, Guido Catalano, Giuliana Sgrena, Roberto Mercadini, Claudio Martelli, Igiaba Scego, Jonathan Bazzi .

With a look at current events, it was decided to entrust the opening address to the journalist Francesca Mannocchi who was able to tell the war in Ukraine with rigor and sensitivity and who wrote a splendid text dedicated to conflicts for Salerno Letteratura.

Many news, starting from the media partnership with Radio 3 (special episode from Salerno of La lingua beat) and from the sections of the festival, which become ten on the occasion of the tenth anniversary: Pasoliniana; Wounds of the nation, the site of historical reflection, born in collaboration with the University of Salerno; Fictions / The narrated world; Classical; Views on today’s world – (Economics / science / politics); Salerno Philosophy; Summer School; Space boys. There will be shows, with names of absolute prestige.

It starts with the reading from Pasolini of Massimo Popolizio (which inaugurates the section Pasoliniana) and ends with Mariangela Gualtieri. In between, three original productions of Salerno Literature: the Sottsass diSara Bertelà, dedicated to the great architect and no less great writer; On the mastery / On the hatefulness with whom Elena Buccir will remember a key figure of culture in Campania and beyond, Franco Forte; the monologue on the story of the economy entrusted to Valentina Carnelutti, with counterpoints by Sebastiano Triulzi and Gennaro Carillo. We also report the unmissable lesson / concert on Verdi by Giovanni Bietti, who returns to Salerno after last year’s success

The Summer School is confirmed, in a richer and completely new edition. Five days, 25 hours, three separate training courses: Screenplay, in collaboration with the Luiss Guido Carli University of Rome which will raffle off a residential scholarship; Cultural journalism with the Awkward Collective and iltuogiornale.it and Rhetoric with Roberto Lombardi. Some of the Summer events are made with the Dipsum and Disuff of the University of Salerno.

The children’s program will see the presence of many specialized authors for a younger audience such as Manlio Castagna, Daniele Aristarco, Davide Morosinotto, Ornella Della Libera and will be enriched by itinerant performances by Alice Melloni and Flavia D’Aiello, by a fun treasure hunt and from an analog photography laboratory.

As usual Salerno Literature will present to the public the authors of the five of the Strega Prize in one of the first public events in Southern Italy after the proclamation and, as usual, the Salerno Book of Europe Prize supported by Bper Banca is back: the technical jury composed by Daria Bignardi, journalist, presenter and writer, Paolo Di Stefano, writer, journalist and academic and Matteo Palumbo, honorary professor of Italian literature at the Federico II University of Naples, fell on Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman (Solferino); My stupid intentions by Bernardo Zannoni (Sellerio) e Lanny by Max Porter (Sellerio).

There will also be space for the Business Literature Award promoted by Festival Città Impresa- ItalyPost, created with the aim of promoting cultural growth, promoting a modern business culture capable of stimulating the development of the Italian industrial fabric and in particular of SMEs. The five finalists of the Prize created in collaboration with Confindustria Salerno and the Salerno Chamber of Commerce will be present at the Salerno event with Antonio Calabrò.

Once again the relationship with the public will be cemented by flash mobs and impromptu performances, with the intention of drawing on a creative heritage that has seen Salerno be, in more or less distant seasons, a place of artistic effervescence and with the aim to expand the audience as much as possible, reaching even the most distracted. The after-festival will be a surprise to be discovered thanks to the Durante il Gin Tonic initiative, a tribute to the first artistic director of Salerno Literature Francesco Durante, who will see guests and the public together to chat informally over a drink. This year there will also be morning appointments on Saturday and Sunday, starting from the inauguration, in the presence of the authorities, with Paolo Pagliaro, called to inaugurate one of the new sections of the festival dedicated to the economy.

“Also this year we have tried to make sense as coherent as possible to the sections of the festival. No subjection to the diktats of publishing, therefore, but a cultural work that puts contents and themes before contingent occasions. Of course, there is always the frenetic pace of festivals, but not separated from spaces for reflection. They consolidate Salerno Philosophy And Classical, which gave good evidence in the past edition – explains the artistic director Gennaro Carillo – A lot of theater, then, in the simple form that the constraints allow us to adopt. Not to compete with other festivals, which have theater in their own name, but for the conviction that theater is also literature, as such a formidable key to access reality. Literature that is not a monad but the symptom of a climate, a context, a time. Hence the importance of a section, Views on today’s world, which this year is enriched by a series of meetings dedicated to the economy. Obviously intended in a sense that is reconciled with the layout of the festival “.

“It will be an important edition full of news – underlines the artistic director Paolo Di Paolo – Salerno Literature demonstrates the growth of an intuition had in 2013 by Ines Mainieri and Francesco Durante, which has led the festival to be today a point of reference for the national editorial calendar and the most important literary event in the South. The ten-year anniversary also means taking stock in an attempt to capitalize on what has been done so far, with the aim of further cementing the dialogue with the region and involving an audience from other Italian cities, to create a great cultural tourism. quality. We will have fun playing with number ten, inviting participants to share their top ten and tell us their idea of happiness “.
